John Heartfield Ernst Neumann Studies,  Kunst und Handwerkkerschule, 1913

In 1913, the John Heartfield Ernst Neumann connection was formed.

Heartfield had become more and more dissatisfied his oil painting apprenticeship. He became interested in advertising slogan competitions and decided to study applied graphic art.

He was able to study with Ernst Neumann, Kunst und Handwerkkerschule (Arts and Crafts School). Neumann was one of the most recognized and respected advertising designers. He held Germany’s only academic chair for advertising design.

Heartfield created a graphic with the moralizing text, “Advertising becomes art and science when it is pursued with the ethical means of truth.”
