Rare photo of John Heartfield taking a photo of his son, Tom Heartfield, circa 1937. Although Janos Reismann shot the majority of Heartfield’s photo components, this shows Jonny’s love of photography as he captures a playful distorted reflection.

After he was forced to settle in East Berlin, Heartfield’s professional life centered on stage and costume design. However, his passion was photography. In almost every photo of my grandfather in Italy, there is either a still or movie camera around his neck. See “Questions for Heartfield’s Grandson” for a memory of a hike we shared in the mountains.

The work of the Dada Artist had many sides. His fury at injustice drove him to risk his life to create the most powerful anti-fascist images in history. His career began as a young art student. He became a Dadaist. He created wonderfully imaginative stage set designs for important playwrights such as Brecht and Piscator. His passion for work continued into his senior years. Video and still photography became his obsession.
In this section, The John J Heartfield Collection will continue to feature rare never-before-published photos of the artist’s life and times.
Heartfield was a man in motion. In a very real sense, he never really stopped working.
