The David King Exhibit

“John Heartfield, Laughter Is A Devastating Weapon” (David King and Ernst Volland) provides the rare opportunity to view John Heartfield’s Tate Modern political art from David King’s private collection. Heartfield’s original artwork is juxtaposed with its corresponding AIZ cover. Here is a sampling of the brilliant art that supported Heartfield’s messages. Heartfield accomplished exquisite detail and nuance in his political art with scissors and paste. Part of Heartfield’s brilliance was his understanding of how his originals would translate into mass produced AIZ covers. He relentlessly drove the rotogravure masters, who engraved the cylinders used to print the AIZ covers, to remain true to his vision. Fortunately, some of Heartfield’s original art survives.
