Die Rote Fahne Editor

Franz Jung

Die rote Fahne
Franz Jung was an editor of the German newspaper Die Rote Fahne (The Red Flag). The paper was founded November 19, 1918 by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg in Berlin. It became the central publication of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD).

The KPD was the most viable political opponent of Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist Party.

Die rote Fahne was illegally distributed when the Nazi rose to power.

“[A “roaring German patriot”] demonstrated that he was prepared to rip it [Heartfield’s poster] away himself, and it was only through the courageous and level-headed intervention of the bookstore personnel that he was held at bay.”

NOTE: The centrally displayed poster toward which the roaring patriot lunged has since become famous as John Heartfield’s first agitational-propaganda photomontage.
