Heartfield London England Years: 1939-1947. First An English Enemy Internment Camp, Then Betrayed By Allies

The main events of John Heartfield’s stay in England begin with periods in of internment in English camps for “enemy aliens.” It ends with the refusal of his pleas (1941) to remain in London for the sake of “his health and his work.”

In England, Heartfield meets Gertrud Fietz. He and Gertrud will be inseparable for the remainder of his life. They will be married in East Germany.

His years in England have a serious effect on Heartfield’s health and his legacy.
