John Heartfield’s stay in England begins in an internment camp for “enemy aliens.” It ends with the refusal of his pleas (1941) to remain in London for the sake of “his health and his work.”
In England, Heartfield meets Gertrud Fietz. He and Gertrud will be inseparable for the remainder of his life. They will be married in East Germany.
His years in England have an enormous effect on Heartfield’s health and his legacy.
