A Moving Island

×

Outside the train the lights all have rainbows
if you see them the right way through the glass
My own reflection became my protection
against being overwhelmed by the past

A touch of infinite patience
A dash of I can’t care
I’m waiting in a station
for some movement to somewhere

And the distant sound of sudden silence
Directly bound to this moving island

The towns as they pass
I really don’t catch them
though I’m staring at their bright-lit boulevards
The man in the next chair is playing solitaire
though I see his mind isn’t really on his cards

Conductor takes my ticket
because my seat is filled
The wheels keep rolling out
a melody that builds

To a distant sound of sudden silence
Directly bound to this moving island
And it holds my mind though I seldom show it
And controls my time though I never know it

The lights inside the train
I wish that they had rainbows
Like the lights I have seen outside the cars
Crossing the state line
I would lose myself in time
My mind goes out among the stars

And as I try to write this
the paper feels like glass
My hands try to fight it
but the train’s moving too fast

So I guess I’ll fall into my dreams
Where nobody calls me on these crazy schemes
And I wonder if I’ll hear the train go
Still wondering if someone, somewhere
Cares enough to know
Yes, I wonder if I’ll hear the train blow
Still wondering if someone, somewhere
Cares enough to know

Moving Island
