“No, our dear Jonny was prompted by only
one thing – a bruised heart
that reacted very strongly to any kind
of adverse, unjust, ominous, or
under deserved utterance affecting
our common society.
That tortured, crushed heart of his,
and that alone, showed him the way.”

Political Artist Helmut Herzfeld [John Heartfield] Was Weisbaden Book Shop Apprentice in 1905

By 1905, the fourteen-year-old Helmut Herzfeld (John Heartfield) has completed elementary school.

The future political artist Helmut Herzfeld becomes an apprenticeship in a bookshop in Weisbaden.

It is likely the imagination he displayed in his innovative book dust covers for Malik-Verlag Publishing was sparked by the hours he spent handling books in the Weisbaden.
