Heartfield London England Years: 1940-1947. First An English Enemy Internment Camp, Then Betrayed By Allies

John Heartfield’s stay in England begins in an internment camp for “enemy aliens.” It ends with the refusal of his pleas (1941) to remain in London for the sake of “his health and his work.”

In England, Heartfield meets Gertrud Fietz. He and Gertrud will be inseparable for the remainder of his life. They will be married in East Germany.

His years in England have an enormous effect on Heartfield’s health and his legacy.

The Chronology section will always grow. Please check the Exhibition’s Social Media Sites for updates.

John Heartfield’s grandson, Professor John J Heartfield, offers an Art & Politics, Politics & Art presentation to audiences in all types of venues. He was a featured presenter at 2016 DADA WORLD FAIR (The Collage Museum, San Francisco). Please write to him for more information.
